About Los Angeles Angels |
| |
Founded as an expansion team in 1961, the franchise was first named the Los Angeles Angels and played in LA’s Wrigley Field. They would move a year later to the newly built Dodger Stadium. In the early 70’s future Hall of Fame Pitcher Nolan Ryan joined the team and tossed four of his seven no-hitters in an Angel’s uniform and was selected an all star five times and in 1977 won the AL TSN Pitcher of the Year. In 1986, the Angels came within one pitch of the World Series when closer Donnie Moore gave up a two-out-two-ball-two-strike-two-run home run to Dave Henderson giving Boston a 6-5 lead that would turn into a 7-6 Boston victory In 1995, the Walt Disney Corporation acquired controlling interest in the Angels after the death of “The Singing Cowboy” Gene Autry, who held the majority. Two years later, citing horrible playing conditions, the franchise and the city of Anaheim agreed to renovate and downsize the stadium to a baseball only type field. The naming rights were sold to Edison International and the field was renamed The Edison International Field of Anaheim (most commonly referred to as The Big Ed). In 2002, the Angels played their way into the World Series against the San Francisco Giants. Led by Troy Glaus, the Angels won the series 4 games to 3, winning their first ever World Series. In 2003, Disney sold the franchise to a group led by Arturo “Arte” Moreno, Angels Baseball, L.P. The sale made the Angels the first American Sports Franchise to be owned by a Hispanic. Two years later, the team was renamed The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The LA Angels were crowned the 2009 American League West Champions on September 28, 2009, knocking out the Texas Rangers and clinching their 8 such title in franchise history. The team will take on the Oakland Athletics in the playoffs.
